Speed-Climbing Festival in Bardonecchia, Concurrent With Games
by OutdoorNewsWire.com Staff
January 11th, 2006

Since no form of climbing: rock, ice or bouldering, has yet to be named an Olympic sport, the UIAA has decided to organize a speed-bouldering festival to be held during the international event. The festival, to take place in Bardonecchia, Italy, has invited 35 climbers for around the globe, including top American competitors like Emily Harrington and Vadim Vinokur and Canadian Mike Doyle.

The secretary general of the UIAA said that bouldering and speed-climbing events woulde be held each evening of the Olympics, according to Climbing.com. Of course these events or festivals would not actually be competitions, since no other type of competition besides the Olympics is allowed to be held in the region during the Games.

The town of Bardonecchia is about 50 miles from Torino and will play host to some of the Game's snowboarding events. As the birthplace of modern sport climbing comps, Bardonecchia now hosts the famed Arco Rock Master every year.
