A snowboarding accident in the back-country of Lake Louise has killed a young man who recently moved to Calgary.
Lake Louise RCMP said Desmond John Prins, 22, was snowboarding out of bounds with friends Monday about 1 p.m. when he fell between 45 m and 60 m off a cliff on Mt. Whitehorn at Lake Louise Ski Area, about 180 km west of Calgary.
His friend Jason Hanna, 22, a Calgary firefighter who was among the group snowboarding with Prins, tried to revive him while another friend ran for help.
"We were cutting back to the main run and he fell down a small ledge," he said.
"I went down to see if he was OK and he fell off the great big cliff."
After Hanna completed two rounds of CPR, Prins coughed and started breathing.
"It was somewhat of a relief -- he came back, I thought it was a good sign," he said.
Prins, who wasn't wearing a helmet, was airlifted unconscious with severe head injuries to Foothills hospital, where he was taken off life support and died Tuesday night.
