Australian Mark Scholinz will attempt a punishing 3000 km walk from Jiayuguan to Shanhaiguan along the Great Wall of China to meet a personal challenge… and raise funds for struggling communities in the developing world.
Supporters can watch the spectacular six-month adventure unfold on his website www.greatwalltrek.info where he will post regular diary updates, photos and video clips.
Scholinz passed the 1000-km mark a few days ago.
"I’ve been fortunate to travel and tackle adventures in various parts of the globe," he says. "Seeing disadvantaged communities throughout the world has made me reflect on how fortunate we are to live in a society where things such as clean drinking water, basic health care and the availability of books aren’t issues of concern."
Mark started epic walk in March this year in Jiayuguan, at the western end of the Ming Dynasty section of the Great Wall, and plans to end in Shanhaiguan, the eastern section, in August. This section of the legendary wall extends for 3,000 kilometres through changing terrains that include desert, mountain ranges and farmland.
Mark wants to involve as many people as possible, particularly people with an adventurous spirit who may not be physically capable of participating in adventurous activities themselves.
By following his trek, he hopes people will have the opportunity to share his experiences in a more personal way. He will use some of the latest hi-tech satellite equipment and mapping software to create an interactive experience for followers of this trek.
